This issue honors Bob Simonsen. Happily married for 58 years with four children and five grandchildren, Bob and his wife chose to reside on Evansville’s west side, and chose a home based solely on its location, a 5 minute drive from the club. He joined the WSSC in 2009, served on the Board of Directors for 3 years, and has chaired committees for 3 consecutive years.
Bob’s early interest and expertise in shooting, takes us back to his mid-twenties when he first began shooting Trap, Skeet, and the Steel Challenge as a young man living in Michigan. He became good at these, and also developed skills as a sharpshooter using a scoped lever-action 22 in Competitive Rifle events. Over the past 60 years, competitive shooting has remained an important part of his life, and shooters truly enjoy shooting with him!
He is a US Veteran having served his country in the Naval Air Corp, 1950-1954 in the Korean conflict. Bob retired from Faultless Castor in 1996 where he was their Director of Engineering. Now at the age of 86, he still manages to spend at least 4 to 6 hours every week at the WSSC to shoot trap, or simply hob nob with good friends to discuss politics, firearms, and trap scores. With his high degree of skills, Bob continues to compete and enjoys teaching new Trap Shooters how to shoot effectively, stressing Firearm Safety Rules on the trap range. His best Trap run tallied 198 hits, just two hits short of a perfect 200.
If your interest lies in reloading, Bob also has broad experience in reloading several handgun and rifle calibers, shot-shell gauges, powders, and equipment. If he doesn’t know the answer, he’ll gladly help you find one.
To those who know him, Bob certainly appears to be a picture of health, yet he purposely deals with problems of aging in a healthy, positive manner. He has never smoked nor drank alcohol, and attributes his healthy outlook on life to his loving wife and family, early morning workouts at the gym, and routine activities at the gun club. In the years to come, Bob wants to see the club continue to improve, and he fully supports better use of the land, and new facilities. Life may be getting simpler and slower these days, but it’s just as dear to him as it has ever been. If you want tips on living a happy life, the next time you see Bob, don’t just pass him by. Ask him about his trap scores or his family, and watch his face light up with joy! Someone may ask you, “Who’s the elderly gentleman with the big smile?” You’ll know to say, “That has to be Bob Simonsen!” --raw
